I finally found a copy of SINDAK! in Filbars. This was scheduled to come out a little after Holy Week, but its great that it was made available this week, since it comes close to the release of TRESE: BOOK 1 (more about that in the next couple of days). So, if you’d like to know more about the origins of Trese, is there or isn’t there a “Trese movie” in the works, do we have anyone in mind for the casting of Trese, who was the mysterious Frenchman who called up Comic Quest, then all the answers can be found in SINDAK! #1 !!! Of course, other reasons to pick up this horror-thriller magazine are the comic book stories by Gerry Alanguilan, Randy Valiente, KC Cordero, Novo Malgapo, Ner Perdina, and the rest of the Sindak! Team. Many thanks to KC Cordero, Athena Fregillana, Paul del Rosario for featuring me and Kajo (and TRESE) in their first issue.

painting people's house “ … I probably need to explain once again why I don't stay long on company-owned works. It's as simple as this -- if I don't own it, I'm not going to spend my life on it. “Or, if you like: you can only paint someone else's house for so long before you start thinking that it might be nice to own your own house one day. “I'm okay with painting other people's houses for short periods, because I'm good at it and it pays well and on nice days it's fun. But I never ever confuse painting a house for owning that house. And if I spent every waking hour painting other people's houses, I wouldn't be able to build houses of my own. “The more creators who only took on housepainting as a part-time gig, the healthier this medium would be.” – warren ellis Which made me think about the work we do in the agency. Client comes to us and tells us to paint their house. Make it look pretty! Make it red! Make it blue! Make it look bigger ...

THE HAUNTING "There is a brand new television commercial of Nestlé All-Purpose Cream of McCann Erickson launched last Sunday that is utterly different from all the Nestlé commercials that have been done by all of the Nestlé advertising agencies in the country. Noy Dyliacco, Nestlé corporate communications director, labeled this as his special challenge to the agency to do a commercial with a relatively small budget that would truly stand above the clutter of TV commercials." -- Nanette A. mini-me Apol twittered about her new stuffed creations, which lead me to her blog entry about her friend Chez who makes dolls , which made me find this doll (see picture above), which made me email it to Wella with the subject heading "The BUDJ doll", which made her reply and send me a revised picture where she used her Powerpoint skills to add eyeglasses to the doll with the big belly, which made me blog about it now.
The Globe IDD campaign (2002) IDD reunion IDD trophy We weren’t supposed to work on this project. I came to the office and found Argem brainstorming for the new IDD campaign. He had this idea for a guy who was calling up his OFW dad, thanking him for the pasalubong he got. In the span of an afternoon we came up with four stories. Argem then worked til 3AM, drawing the storyboards. Back then, our routine was, he’d leave the boards on my desk and I’d just pick them up before going to the meeting. So, I got the meeting and realized that Argem only gave me three storyboards. He didn’t get draw the TROPHY story. I texted him and he replied, apologizing that he was too tired to draw the fourth board. The meeting started. One team presented several boards and I presented my three boards and one script. As luck would have it, they chose the last two stories we presented. TRIVIA: During the first year of Globe’s (G)-moments campaign, we use one guy to do all the VOs. He was the “Voice...
The Globe MMS campaign (2002) PHOTO MSG TRAFFIC CAM We’ve got cameo appearances all over these two TV commercials. In TRAFFIC CAM, I did the voice of the grumbling guy. Telly, the producer, thought I was perfect for the part. In PHOTO MSG, Taps did the voice of the tall guy. And, of course, that was my photo with Donita in the phone screen. That picture was shot during the last shooting day of Donita's second GENTXT commercial. It was around 2AM and the director just yelled, “Pack up!” The cast and crew were lining up to get their picture taken with the MTV VJ. Dadi, my CD, pushed me beside Donita and yelled, “Picture! Picture!” Next thing I knew, I was getting hugged by Donita and the flash going off. Cut-to: months later, me and Argem were working on the storyboard for the PHOTO MSG service. The script called for a “loser guy” who gets to meet a beautiful celeb and his friends wouldn’t believe him. Argem was the one you remembered that photo and placed in the storyboard...
March 2002 : we launched Globe's "making great things possible campaign". Here are the three TV commercials that started the campaign. PUNK KAMI NA FUNNY GUY FOOTNOTES: PUNK was originally about a punk-rocker guy who was tormenting his kid brother. The commercial was supposed to start in the back of the car and their parents were taking them to school. The Punk Kid was making fun of his baby brother and acting all tough. He then gets a call from his girlfriend and he starts talking to her in this cutesy voice and starts to say things like, "Hi baby! Love you, baby!". So, when they finally get to school, Punk Kid gets out of the car. And just as he joins his punk barkada , the whole family calls out to him and yell, "Bye baby! Love you, baby!" That was the initial story. But we already had the "Kami na" and "Funny Guy" story. We couldn't have all our stories to be so humorous. So, it was re-written without the baby brother....

THE ISLAND OF DR. ELLIS I was in FULLY BOOKED last week and wasn’t really planning to buy anything (yeah … right!) when I picked up Warren Ellis’ STRANGE KILLINGS: NECROMANCER. Even though I’ve been a big Ellis fan ever since his Stormwatch run, I haven’t really bought every single thing he’s written. So, I flipped to the back of the book and read the blurb: Finally, all six issues of the zombie epic Necromancer collected into one volume! Warren Ellis’ cult hit STRANGE KILLINGS is back with “combat magician” William Gravel’s most gut-wrenching mission yet! Deployed to a steaming Philippine island, Gravel’s assignment is to assassinate an investigative reporter about to expose a chemical weapon lab sanctioned by the British government. A Warren Ellis character in the Philippines? Well, I just had to read how he portrayed our “steaming islands”. As mentioned in the blurb, William Gravel is a “combat magician”. Gravel is what you get when you combine the Punisher and John Cons...
Two guys walk in a bar… Well, it doesn’t have to be a bar. It could happen in a café, in the bus, or in the elevator. … and they start about girls. About the girl they’ve always lusted after, about the girl they loved, about all the trouble they got into because of girls. You don’t always get the complete story but you hear enough to know enough. Sometimes, there’s just that one guy who does all the talking and he’s delivering his sermon on girls, he’s laying out his manifesto on the problem with women, he’s confessing why he can’t live without them. You know what I’m talking about? Then that’s exactly what you’ll get when you read Alan Navarra’s GIRL TROUBLE. It reads like a transcript of several guys (or is it just one guy’s) discussion of women. It reads like rambling poem, like two DJs who thought they were off the air and talked about the things that shouldn’t be broadcast. Aside from the rambling transcript, GIRL TROUBLE is told through a series of black-and-white photos and grap...
