Tony Scott’s DÉJÀ VU can also be described as CSI: TIME TRAVEL or "Seven Days" Minus Four (did anybody ever watch that TV show “Seven Days”?).
In the movie, Denzel Washington plays ATF Officer Doug Carlin. In the course of investigating the bombing of a New Orlean’s ferry, he is recruited to become part of secret government task force to help track down the terrorists.
“Snow White” is the top secret operation/device that allows the task force to look four days into the past. So, imagine Google Earth, but you’re looking at that spot of the earth four days ago—and you can even go inside the rooms of house, see through walls, and hear people’s conversations. The “time window” works like “video streaming”, so they can’t rewind and check other places in the past. They can only view one place, one person at a time.
The writers toss in some time travel/physics terminologies like the Einstein-Rosen Bridge just to make the logic of it all sound okay. (They could’ve easily said it was because of the flux-capacitor and the movie would’ve still been okay.)
Anyway, so, for most of the move, Carlin and the team of physicists (plus one FBI agent) are stuck on a room, using Google Time to track down clues about the bomber—who turns out to be Jesus Christ. (Well, the bomber was played by Jim Caviezel. So, from being a Messiah, he ends up playing a guy with a Messianic complex. Neat.)
One of the key elements in solving the bombing was a murder woman played by the very sexy Paula “I Kinda Look Like Halle Barry When I’m All Wet” Patton. So, since she’s dead, but Denzel’s character is watching her life from four days ago, and since she's so pretty, he naturally falls in love with the victim. (So, I can also say, this movie is CSI: Somewhere in Time.)
Anyway, don’t want to spoil the rest of the movie for you. I enjoyed it. I really did! It’s been awhile since a crime/action movie got me really excited and made me worry for the hero. (Last time that happened was when we watched CASINO ROYALE.)
DÉJÀ VU is one of the best movies of the year (considering the last movies I was SUPER NOYPI and ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH ZE MOVIE).
By the way, did anyone notice that the logo of Super Noypi resembled something very familiar? Take a look…
Maybe I was just seeing things.
Anyway, here’s something new for the New Year (and we’re already 12 days old into it)…
Art by Avid Liongoren who refuses to draw the Kambal because he doesn’t think they’ll survive Philippine weather in their black business suits and he doesn’t think Trese should be running around in a trench coat; that’s why she’s wearing a t-shirt in this pin-up.
