TRESE: The Choir

“They just kept coming back, night after night। And every night, it seemed like there would be more kids, enough to fill up the front gate of the house; all of them singing `Silent Night` like it was the saddest song in the world. And every night, I’d see her –the girl in the red dress. She’d look at me, as if she wanted to tell me something, but had this great need to sing this song, to finish the song and maybe if she did finish the song she tell me that thing that she wanted to tell me, but she just never gets the chance to do so. Whilce Portacio talks about TRESE

An AZ VIDEO BLOG : Whilce Portacio's message to pinoy komikeros From the video: The first topic is comments on Filipino Komiks … on what’s been happening in the local scene lately. I have to say I’ve been very proud of what been happening lately with books like Zsazsa Zaturnnah and the reaction its gotten from the Philippine society as a whole. And I’m extremely proud of, for instance, Trese. … when I was in the Philippines and I was introduced to this ghost-hunter subculture in the Philippines, I was enthralled by that. And I always thought someone should who take that world, those people, and show the world what’s that really like. I believe Budj and Kajo have done an exquisite job of giving us that slice of life, of that world, that what that subculture in the Philppines is like, and I believe once that gets known with world gets to know that, they’re just going to go crazy. Thanksgiving (aka a very late post about Komikon 2008)

The great thing about having insomnia the day before a big event is that at least you’re awake to get to the event on time. With only two hours sleep, I actually got to the UP Bahay ng Alumni at 9am. (Kajo didn’t sleep at all and arrived a couple of minutes after I got there.) Before we set up at the Visprint table, I asked Syeri if we could give away some Alamat comic books (as a way to commemorate 14 years of Alamat Comics). She said yes and I brought down four boxes (14 years worth of unsold Alamat Comics) and said they could give it away to everyone who came to the Komikon. (Well, it wasn’t really 14 years of unsold comics, more like 4 years worth. We gave away copies of Batch72, Indigo Valley, Tattooed, TKS:The Kill Stalker, 3 copies of ARCHON, 2 copies of EXODUS, and a partridge in a pair tree.) An hour or so later, we were set-up at the Visprint table and Team Skyworld (with Ian, Mervin, and Shali) was set-up at the Alamat table. They were joined by Paolo Fabregas, who has a sne

KOMIKON na!!!

Well, you heard the lady, see you all at the KOMIKON, this Saturday, Nov22, at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. At the Visprint table, we’ll have the two TRESE books available, as well as a free poster for everyone who buys a copy. I believe Manix Abrera will also be there with his KIKOMACHINE books (Asteeeg!) and Freely Abrigo with his KULAS compilations (kulet!!!). I think we’ll also have copies of ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH and the PENUMBRA horror novellas as well. Right beside the Visprint table will be the Alamat Comics table, where you can get copies of THE LAST DATU (my first collaboration with Kajo), as well as KADILIMAN by David Hontiveros and Edgar Tadeo. Also available will be SKYWORLD: APOCRYPHA and the ashcan/sneak preview of SKYWORLD: BOOK 2 by Mervin Ignacio and Ian Sta. Maria. Actually, you can already see a preview of at the art at: iantoy.deviantart.com Once again, we’ll be sharing the table with Reno Maniquis who will have copies of MASKARADO ready for anyone who hasn’t gotten on board

Kulang na lang sa Abante...

TRESE in Manila Bulletin In the world of Alexandra Trese, heroine of the comic book series "Trese," there are many things that go bump in the streets of Manila whenever darkness falls, and the city’s enthusiastic club-goers only make up a small portion of it. Manananggals, tiyanaks, tikbalangs, and duwendes make their presence felt when the lights go out, and it is Alexandra Trese’s job to keep them in line. Read the complete interview at: http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2008/11/01/YTCP20081101139546.html TRESE in the Philippine Star The spell both Budjette and his partner Kajo cast comes not from their influences mentioned in past interviews like the comic book “Planetary” or “Twilight Zone” but rather from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman.” The heroine Trese calmly interrogates a rich dragon man who is heir to a Chinese mall empire and in another panel seeks help from a Quiapo merchant who can talk to cats. The world of “Trese” is a place where you must suspend your disbelief and accep

The Proper Conditions

Imagine, if you were an aspiring comic book writer or artist, and you were living in 1980, what opportunities would be available to you? Around this time, the local komiks industry was still doing well and if you worked hard enough, knocked on the right doors, you could get yourself published. If you wanted to work for Marvel and DC Comics, then it would be best that you already know certain people working for those companies. You could try and send a cold submission via air mail (or if you could afford it, via FedEx). What if you wanted to create your own comic book character and publish it yourself? Well, that was almost unheard of back then. Jump-cut to 14 years later. Imagine, if you were an aspiring comic book writer or artist, and you were living in 1994, what opportunities would be available to you? Around this time, desktop publishing software was becoming more affordable. Photocopier machines now produced better copies. Colored Xerox machines also started to arrive in the co

Trick or Treat!

Yesterday was the agency's annual Halloween Trick-or-Treat Party for the kids. Greg and Ernie decided to dress up as the Kambal. They couldn't get any of the girls to come dressed as Trese, but they were able to ask Lady to pose with them for one picture. (Now, if I can only convince them to attend the Komikon, other events, and my birthday party.)

"I Love You Sweatheart" A man risked his life to write the words. A man hung upside down (an idiot friend holding his legs?) with spray paint to write the words on a girder fifty feet above a highway. And his beloved, the next morning driving to work...? His words are not (meant to be) so unique. Does she recognize his handwriting? Did he hint to her at her doorstep the night before of "something special, darling, tomorrow"? And did he call her at work expecting her to faint with delight at his celebration of her, his passion, his risk? She will know I love her now, the world will know my love for her! A man risked his life to write the words. Love is like this at the bone, we hope, love is like this, Sweatheart, all sore and dumb and dangerous, ignited, blessed-- always, regardless, no exceptions, always in blazing matters like these: blessed. Supernatural Storytelling By Ruel S. De Vera, Philippine Daily Inquirer, October 12. 2008 MANILA, Philippines -Almost from the very beginning, Budjette Tan has been surrounded by the unusual. “When I was a newborn baby, my parents moved into what turned out to be a haunted house,” he explains. “The ghosts were seen by my yaya and my uncles. My parents didn’t believe in such things, until one summer day after my mom gave me a bath. She said the right side of my face suddenly wrinkled up—that it looked like the face of an old man. She prayed over me until I became normal again.” Psychics were summoned and a séance held. “The psychics told the spirits that they had to move on to the next plane. The haunting stopped after some time.” Even Tan did not know that something similarly spooky would redefine his life later on. With him doing the writing and Kajo Baldisimo providing the art, Tan came up with “Trese,”a comic book series that follows mysterious investigator Alexandra Trese as she he

The Secret Origin of Bakeman In an earlier post, I talked about the legendary amount of time it takes to create a Piattos campaign. If there’s another campaign that would come close to being legendary, it would be the Magic Chips campaign. It took us a months to finally create a campaign that got approval from client. We were already getting ready to produce it when another commercial came out using the same TV show/genre we had pegged for our story. We had to go back to the drawing board. So, I started scribbling on my notebook. What did we need to do? We needed to emphasize that this particular snack was baked . Could we set in an oven? Could we show some bakers in a giant oven? Maybe the bakers were a rock band or rap stars and they’d be singing about the baked Magic Chips? Chips… Chips… C.H.I.P.S. That old TV show about the California Highway Patrol. Two guys on a bike. Who else rides a motorbike? MaskRiderBlack. Shaider… (yeah, I know he doesn’t ride a b
