March 2002 : we launched Globe's "making great things possible campaign".
Here are the three TV commercials that started the campaign.
PUNK
KAMI NA
FUNNY GUY
FOOTNOTES:
PUNK was originally about a punk-rocker guy who was tormenting his kid brother. The commercial was supposed to start in the back of the car and their parents were taking them to school. The Punk Kid was making fun of his baby brother and acting all tough. He then gets a call from his girlfriend and he starts talking to her in this cutesy voice and starts to say things like, "Hi baby! Love you, baby!". So, when they finally get to school, Punk Kid gets out of the car. And just as he joins his punk barkada, the whole family calls out to him and yell, "Bye baby! Love you, baby!"
That was the initial story. But we already had the "Kami na" and "Funny Guy" story. We couldn't have all our stories to be so humorous. So, it was re-written without the baby brother. The angst-ridden punk kid was retained. After the story was presented to the rest of the team, it was then suggested that the punk kid should be a girl and put focus on her and the mother.
KAMI NA was one of the stories I wrote. Not much was revised from the story's first draft. (I sometimes wonder if we could've still made that story more interesting, more funny if we took the time to revise it.) Anyway, Direk Sid just made it a whole lot better by setting it in that club and giving it that music video treatment.
FUNNY GUY had a different punchline. The guy's ringtone was supposed to be the Looney Tunes theme and the beautiful babe was supposed to say, "What's up, doc?" We were already shooting the commercial and we still had no approval to use that ringtone. So, we had Joey Mead say different punchlines, reacting to a cellphone that wasn't really ringing. (One of the tones we wanted to use was the 1960s Batman theme. So, we had different takes of Joey Mead saying, "To the batcave!") A day before we going to air the commercial, we finally got approval to use the Flinstones ringtone. Yabba Dabba Do!!!
