"I Love You Sweatheart" A man risked his life to write the words. A man hung upside down (an idiot friend holding his legs?) with spray paint to write the words on a girder fifty feet above a highway. And his beloved, the next morning driving to work...? His words are not (meant to be) so unique. Does she recognize his handwriting? Did he hint to her at her doorstep the night before of "something special, darling, tomorrow"? And did he call her at work expecting her to faint with delight at his celebration of her, his passion, his risk? She will know I love her now, the world will know my love for her! A man risked his life to write the words. Love is like this at the bone, we hope, love is like this, Sweatheart, all sore and dumb and dangerous, ignited, blessed-- always, regardless, no exceptions, always in blazing matters like these: blessed. Supernatural Storytelling By Ruel S. De Vera, Philippine Daily Inquirer, October 12. 2008 MANILA, Philippines -Almost from the very beginning, Budjette Tan has been surrounded by the unusual. “When I was a newborn baby, my parents moved into what turned out to be a haunted house,” he explains. “The ghosts were seen by my yaya and my uncles. My parents didn’t believe in such things, until one summer day after my mom gave me a bath. She said the right side of my face suddenly wrinkled up—that it looked like the face of an old man. She prayed over me until I became normal again.” Psychics were summoned and a séance held. “The psychics told the spirits that they had to move on to the next plane. The haunting stopped after some time.” Even Tan did not know that something similarly spooky would redefine his life later on. With him doing the writing and Kajo Baldisimo providing the art, Tan came up with “Trese,”a comic book series that follows mysterious investigator Alexandra Trese as she he...

The Secret Origin of Bakeman In an earlier post, I talked about the legendary amount of time it takes to create a Piattos campaign. If there’s another campaign that would come close to being legendary, it would be the Magic Chips campaign. It took us a months to finally create a campaign that got approval from client. We were already getting ready to produce it when another commercial came out using the same TV show/genre we had pegged for our story. We had to go back to the drawing board. So, I started scribbling on my notebook. What did we need to do? We needed to emphasize that this particular snack was baked . Could we set in an oven? Could we show some bakers in a giant oven? Maybe the bakers were a rock band or rap stars and they’d be singing about the baked Magic Chips? Chips… Chips… C.H.I.P.S. That old TV show about the California Highway Patrol. Two guys on a bike. Who else rides a motorbike? MaskRiderBlack. Shaider… (yeah, I know he doesn’t ride a b...

"They had been in love once—equally and passionately. Like a spider web that you walk into, it is not so easy to get all the tendrils of real love off after you have passed through it." --Jonathan Carroll, THE GHOST IN LOVE Download the first chapter of the book at: http://www.jonathancarroll.com/books/theghostinlove.html I just wish the bookstores would start ordering more of his books!
The Art of Collecting Stories I found these videos of Jonathan Harris' talk a couple of months ago. That was around the time were working on the Globe "Connected 24ever" project. When Harris talked about his experiment / exploration to find new stories, it made me think about the stories we were trying to tell with the Globe campaign. There were certain nights when it felt like I had run out of stories to tell. Thankfully, with everyone pitching in, we pooled together a good number of interesting tales. Watching Harris' journey makes me remember that I need to spend more time outside of the office and collect more stories. (Well, we try our best to get out of the office earlier than usual). My friend Rog had a favorite line from the movie "The Lady and the Tramp". There was a scene where the two dogs were chasing after a car. Lady asked, "What are we doing?" Tramp smiled back and said, "Making memories." Yup, need to go out there and make...

great marketing gimmick for TRESE ...now if I can only find the marketing budget to do stunts like this. :)
THE INVINCIBLE PACMAN This is a panel from THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, illustrated by Salvador Larocca. Doesn't Tony Stark look a lot like Manny Pacquiao? In this current story arc written by Matt Fraction, Iron Man has been shown visiting the Philippines after terrorists killed the Triumph Division, a Filipino super-team. Maybe Manny and Tony switched places. Maybe one of them is a Skrull?

connected 24ever And so it all comes down to this. After two months of secret meetings, weekends lost to OT, gaining weight thanks to all the OT food (we got an umbrella from Aristocrat because we ordered so much from them), last minute / last second revisions, twists in the plot that would make Jack Bauer just surrender and cry, we finally, finally launched Globe’s new campaign. Hundreds of hours of work, all compressed into 30-seconds. Of course, you can expect more that just this 30-second TV commercial. Below are the credits of the people behind this launch material. But if were to list every single person that helped conceptualize, strategize, craft, and execute this campaign, I might as well just attach the entire directory of the McCann World Group. It was, most definitely, an unforgettable learning and trying experience. Stay tuned! More to come! And if you want to know more on how you and your friends can keep connected 24ever, just click the link below: http://www1.globe...
Piattos TVCs (2008) Legend has it that a creative team once went on a journey to find the big idea for a new Piattos TV commercial. They were never heard from again. It seems to have already become a tradition in Harrison, that any team that tries to make a new Piattos TV commercial would end up in strange time-space warp of continuous revisions. So, we were quite surprised that we were able to get approval for the 30-second material after three tries. Then we were asked to make a 15-second TV commercial for the new flavor; and we thought, “This should be easy!” Legend has it that the creative team went on a journey… CUT-TO: months later … we finally got approval for the 15-second TVC and finally got to shoot it and it finally aired this month. And the legend grows. I think we've been watching too much HOUSE. Last week, my mom told me about how she almost choked while she was drinking her strawberry Frapuccino. She was in the mall, walking around in a store, drinking her Frap, when she suddenly coughed and couldn’t breathe. She said she felt her throat tighten and she struggled for her air. She grabbed onto the first person that came in the store, who happened to be the sales lady reporting for work. The sales lady was carrying a bottle of mineral water. My mom pointed at the bottle and the sales lady gave her some water to drinking. She soon recovered and was able to breathe normally. My mom thanked the lady and found out her name was Jona. Couple of days later, she said that the same thing happened, but it wasn’t as bad as the first one. This prompted her to go to Medical City where she underwent several tests, including a pulmonary exam. So, she was telling us about all this during dinner last Sunday. Monday. 4:30am. My mom barged in my ro...

“You gotta remember in the entire history of the universe ... you’re the only ‘you’ that has ever existed and ever will exist,” Grant Morrison said. “... there’s nobody in existence who is you, and no one can ever see the world the way you see it and can tell the rest of us how it looks. And it might be so different and so beautiful that it changes everything.”
