ANOTHER BRIGHT IDEA I was trying sleep when Brandie came into the room because he wanted to bounce off ideas about his new campaign. His story was about how Great Taste instant coffee tastes as good as brewed coffee or as great as espresso. I hid under the blanket and told him to go away. He proceeded to tell his storyboard anyway. It was supposed to star Leo Martinez and another lady and they were supposed to be husband and wife. A classy, rich neighbor came over to visit and asked for espresso. Leo Martinez’s wife wanted to impress the society girl neighbor and told her husband to make espresso. Leo Martinez then runs into the kitchen and starts to mix the Great Taste in a cup of hot water while imitating the sounds of an espresso machine. Of course, like most commercials, we have the “happy ending” where the product saves the day because it tastes so good… in this case, tastes like espresso. By this time, I had sat up and started to pitch ideas on how to make the commercial funnier....

When I first read the script, I told him it would make a great graphic novel. He shook his head and said wrote the story with the intention of telling it through film. Well, one can definitelty argue with the creator. So, please do take a look at the movie trailer/music video featuring Sandwich's song "Back to Center". (You might want to take a Bonamin after the video, but it's still a kick-ass video. ASTIG!!!)

On a side note, I recently found an proposal I sent to Marvel back in 1999. It was pitch for a new mini-series under their MARVEL KNIGHTS imprint. It's interesting how much of TRESE was based on that story, where I used several B-grade heroes and villians and even included twins who wore masks. Just goes to show that sometimes, a rejected idea can become the source of your next material.

We Are Giants There's the latest commercial from Globe made by the fun-loving guys here at Harrison Communications . Reinard Santos , the art director, was the one who came up with main idea for this ad. Mervin Ignacio wrote the copy. Directed by Jun Reyes. SFX was done here in Manila by Unitel; additional SFX were done in Digit Digit in Hing Kong.

It has been awhile since a story got me teary-eyed. In fact, I can't even remember the last time a comic book made me weepy. Which shows the power of this six-page comic book story that Jeph Loeb wrote in honor of his son Sam, who died of cancer at the age of 19. You might appreciate it better if you read Loeb's SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS , but I think it stands on its own as a very good and moving story. Plot-wise, it sounds like something Warren Ellis already tackled in GLOBAL FREQUENCY (another story that has cellphones playing an important part of the story). Marketing-wise, it's something new, as far as promoting novels and authors are concerned. (As reported by Ernie Schenk and Adverblog .) VAS-wise, they're offering the usual ringtones, wallpaper. (The trick is, to offer something to the reader that won't be found in the novel.) Makes me wonder if this marketing-gimmick will work for some of out local authors.

I'm talking about Neil Gaiman posting the link to TRESE in his blog, that's what I'm talking about. I emailed Mr. Gaiman last night, inviting him to check out TRESE. Of course, I was hoping he'd check it out and maybe leave a message on the comments board. Something along the lines of: "Nice." And that would've made me happy. (I still remember the time I met Dave McKean at the 1994 San Diego Comic-Con and I showed him some of Brandie's artwork for PAYASO. McKean flipped through the pages and muttered, "It's good."
