THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY Wasn't able to get a copy of Marvel's RUNAWAYS by writer Brian K. Vaughan and penciler Adrian Alphona. Got to see a preview of the book in Marvel's website and really liked the art. But when I went to Comic Quest and Filbars they didn't have anymore copies. Couple of days ago, I found out that artist Adrian Alphona is Pinoy! (J.Torres was the one who tipped me off.) After a quick Google search, I found Adrian's online portfolio . Eventually got Adrian's email address and found out that he's based out of Toronto and he's never heard of Alamat Comics! Oh, the horror! Adrian was trying to get into an ad agency, when he got hired by Bright Anvil as a freelance artist. The company eventually got into more comic book projects and he got assigned to those projects. He got his break when he showed his portfolio to Marvel editor C.B. Cebulski at the Philadelphia Comic-con. And here I am, working in an ad agency, trying to ...

BRANDIE: THE COCKROACH SLAYER The other night was Creative Guild Awards and Brandie's Baygon print ad got the 1st Runner-up place. HURRAHH!!! You can check out some of Brandie's works here . The print ad of the year went to Smart. Ahem. :) Two of our TVCs were finalists but didn't win. Oh well, there's always the Ad Congress this November and next year's Creative Guild Awards. Back to work.

EQUILIBRIUM Reviewed by Karen Kunawicz While REIGN OF FIRE had a lot of hype and dragons surrounding its release in theaters here, I was disappointed with the storytelling and the characters. To the point where I wanted the dragons to win and just wipe out the human race. GO DRAGONS GO! Not even Christian Bale's dark and grim stares or Matthew McConaughey's over the top redneck hardcore army guy could save the script, story and directing. EQUILIBRIUM was released on Manila screens without much hype and fanfare but when it comes to Sci-fi B Movies, this one totally SATISFIES! Borrow some elements from the Matrix, Gattaca, 1984 and throw in a little bit of Minority Report and you have the future world of Libria where war is eliminated by eliminating hate and anger, by eliminating human emotion. Carl went to the office to deliver copies of ZSAZSA #2 and it suddenly became a mini-fans day. My CD even allowed us to use the conference room as a "autograph area." Nanni started to read her copy as soon as she got it and was almost done by the time Carl had to go. They were all thrilled to see one of Carl's sketches --a new character in Zsazsa's next adventure. Couple of hours later, we met up with Grace and her friends at Segafredo and they already got to read Zsazsa #2. They said they definitely want to see what happens next. Putting more pressure on Carl to start work on Zsazsa's Manila adventure. Let's see what happens to Zsazsa. I've got a feeling something great will happen before the end of the year. Go Carl, go!

One of our client is leaving and the agency decided to give him a despedida in LA COCINA DE TITA MONING . At first I didn’t want to go because of the workload and I thought La Cocina was the same Cocina in the food court of the mall. Well, I went anyway, since my boss said, “Well, you better be there!” And I’m glad I did go. La Cocina is located inside the compound of Malacanang Palace and it turned out to be a house built in the 1930s. Our hostess is the granddaughter of Alejandro Roces Legarda. Alejandro’s wife was Dona Ramona Legarda or more affectionately called Tita Moning. All the guests first gathered in this veranda-like area located outside the house, where we were severed drinks and toasted bread with queso de bola spread. Before we could proceed to dinner, we were given a quick tour and history lesson about the house. Dinner was held on the second floor. PALANCA PANIC ATTACK Mark confirmed that the deadline for the Palanca is on the 30th and I don't have a single thing to enter. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGHHH!!! I usually get to read a press release about it and that would remind me about the contest, but I didn't see any this year. Then again, I should've just marked my calendar since the contest always happens this time of the year. AAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!

MY EVER DEVOLVING HEADLINES While most of the working world have already gone home or have begun their trek to the province, I am still here at the office because we have to release print ads and merchandising materials that have to up by Easter Sunday. (They have to be released today because there will be no work from tomorrow til next week.) After checking several dozen X-MEN banners and streamers, we get a call from client, who got a call from some Marvel guy or 20th Century Fox guy abroad who said, that we can't use the phrase: JOIN THE BATTLE! Due to America's current preoccupation with Iraq, they don't want their characters to be associated with anything related to war, hence we can't say "battle." Hmmm... but isn't X2 all about the impending start of a "genetic war" between humans and mutants? We have another ad coming out on Sunday which will feature other Marvel superheroes.
