Brandie got me this book for Christmas. And he got it for two reasons: 1. Because the book cover looked cool. 2. And because it has the same title as a story made by the TAGG boys. Brandie scanned the "atom" design and used it as the main design element of the gift wrapper. That yellow atom on a red background is now in my cubicle. It's sort of my icon or sigil. To remind me to focus. That there can be power in something so small. Other Voyager Classsics are now available at Powerbooks. Makes me want to collect all of them just because they would all look so cool on my bookshelf. All of them are priced at P339 even though some are thicker than others. Makes me want to get a new copy of Neuromancer ... just because. Sci-fi is a forgotten love for me. One of the books that I read back in the summer of `93 was this thick sci-fi anthology from around the world. I ended writing one of my only sci-fi stories. Hope to get that published one of these d...
It’s 11:50pm of a Sunday and I’m here at the office because I felt that I had something to write, but not really sure what it is. Just watched the movie HEARTS IN ATLANTIS which was based on a novel by Stephen King . It was one of those slow movies that could have been shown on RPN9 and something we could have watched on one of those slow Saturday afternoons. There was something about the story of the boy, his childhood, his growing up, his finding a mentor, his first love, that was compelling. King has told this same story in various forms. He told the same story in THE BODY and it was a the same setting in THE IT. There’s something about going back one’s childhood that’s… that seems to be the story that I want to tell. But which one? The TAGG story? The “Darna's barkada” story? The “Comic Book Café” story? They all seem to be the same story, told from different points of views. Then again, that’s what King did. He was able to tell a horror story and a co...
It's a Saturday and I'm at work. Wasn't able to go to the blogger's EB that Mark set-up. My only consolation was seeing Barbie at the recording studio. She's so cute. =0) I'm such a drooling fanboy. Was only able to say, "Hello" and waved. After that I just drooled. Ugh.
Finally got my copy of OCHLORAT which was illustrated by Gerry . Comic Quest supposedly only got six copies. So, since I got one copy and another copy is reserved for Gerry, that leave four copies for you guys to fight over. OCHLOCRAT was a fun read. The lead character, the Ochlocrat, reminded me of Spider Jerusalem , but this time he’s armed with hovering cameras and puts criminals on trials on TV and the internet. He presents the evidence to everyone watching and people vote online on what the verdict should be. In between all of that, he’s promotes certain products like life insurance and condoms. The art by Gerry was great! Unfortunately, I think Gerry swore off from illustrating anything like this every again. Just take a look at all the detail in the background. Even the little hover-cams are super-detailed. So, Gerry what’s next? Try and get the last four copies of OCHLOCRAT from Comic Quest, Megamall, it’s worth it. I also got THE ULTIMATES . And that made me ...
From the FWD-email Department: Advertising Humor You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, “I’m fantastic in bed.” That’s Direct Marketing. The AdGods Finish big meeting with the "gods" on the 34th floor. They liked what we did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, comes the hard part-- convincing client. Today is New Comic Book Day! I hope to be able to get out and get the new stuff. ULTIMATES and JLA should be arriving today. Get HIGH this March. Here are more preview pages from Leinil Yu's HIGH ROADS. I'm excited!!! and at the same time feel somewhat down because their book reminds of something I wanted to do when we were stating Alamat -- it was story called THE FLYING PHANTOM and it was also set in WWII. He was one of those reluctant heroes that suddenly receive the power of flight and ends up fighting Nazi vampires, killer robots, and other doomsday devices. Maybe someday I'll get to finish writing that story and maybe Bow will finish drawing it. Wish I had time to write it. ...and the work continues and this will contnue till next week...
January 28 Today is my dad's birthday. In his early 20s, he became one of the pioneers in Philippine television . Talk about a tough act to follow. :) Happy birthday dad.
Diana, the heroine we call Wonder Woman, was going to lose her virginity. "I'm not sure how Wizard got the information, though I may well have been chatting with them and its very possible that I mentioned it, although later in an interview I did say that it was only a plan," explains Jimenez . "I told them as I was discussing the next year's plans although I didn't think it wasn't going be such a big deal. I don't know why, but I just didn't think it would be such a big deal." Hmmm... now, this would be great way to explain to kids about the birds and the bees and supermen. Reminds of that joke that that involed Superman, Wonder Woman, and Invisible Man. Uhhh... nevermind.
Pinoys take the high road HIGH ROADS #1 Written by Scott Lobdell; art and cover by Leinil Yu and Gerry Alanguilan. Colors by Edgar Tadeo. 32 pages, $2.95, in stores on April 3. A new Cliffhanger title makes its splashy debut. In the final days of WWII, U.S. Army Captain Nick Highroad is dangling from the side of a mansion carved out of ice at a secret Nazi compound located in the Arctic! How did he get there? And who are the diminutive English actor, the former Fuehrer's mistress, and the ex-kamikaze pilot who seem to be his only friends? Find out most (but not all) the answers in this high-impact, high-concept, high-drama first issue. I just wish that Leinil's next project would be more Pinoy-oriented or at least have a Filipino character. Then again, maybe I should just shut up and write my own comic book and let people what they want to do. :)
Life-Envy Grace says I suffer from life-envy. Same ailment that Roach supposedly has. My life-envy to become a "professional" comic book writer has been made worse ever since I found out that J.Torres is Filipino. Got to read his comic book SIDEKICKS and loved it. Somewhat reminded me of BATCH72. Just read J.Torres line-up of books that are coming out this year. Wow... all I can say is... WOW! I like the JASON AND THE ARGOBOTS book. Looks like fun. Looks like the type of thing that would get kids reading comic books. Hay naku... well, as Gaiman said, "Write. Finish stuff." I still Gerry that plot. Should get it done this week. Then there's the job that lies ahead and from the looks of things, the next couple of weeks will be crazy! The fun never stops.
BABBLING ABOUT OUR MOBILE FUTURE from TheFeature.com "An alliance of no substance. We at Microsoft were left scratching our heads, asking ourselves, 'Is that it?'" Juha Christensen, vice-president of Microsoft's mobility group, on Nokia's Series 60 software platform announcement. "My strong suspicion is that in the near term more people will lose data on their PDAs by running over them in their driveways than they will by viruses. That's not to say the virus threat won't increase, but right now it doesn't seem too damaging." Frank Prince, senior analyst, Forrester Research "The growth of wireless connectivity is faster even than the growth of the Internet." Alex Kanakaris, chief executive, Kanakaris Wireless "We think, based on what we see now in Europe and Asia, that music, as well as gaming, are going to be two of the hottest things that are going to be available on wireless devices when 3G tech...
That Damned Collective Unconscious Way back 1995, Dave asked me to be editor of a comic series he was writing. It was all called "Templars" and my Hollywood-pitch for it would be, "It's James Bond meets magic." It was all about espionage, intrigue, and magic being used by terrorists. It gave the term "black ops" new meaning. It was supposed to be illustrated by Taps. He did a grand total of two pages. Dave ended up writing over 25 scirpts for that series. None of them have ever been illustrated because we could never find the right guy. Flash forward to today. Saw this new Image book called REX MUNDI . And it's all about templars! Had to call up Dave an tell him all about it. It's not exactly Dave's plot, but the foundation of the story is the same. That sucks. Oh well... Maybe one of the days that story will be drawn and published.
Unholy Online Yo Jo is finally bloggin'. Check out the UNGOD 's blog. Strange to read Yo Jo's throughts and musings in english. It's like a totally different person. Well, not really. I'm rambling. I'm babbling. It's 10am and I need to write for a dozen merchandising materials.
My computer clock is slow. it's wrong. Says it's only 8:24am. Obviously it's wrong. Because I'd still be asleep if it was really 8:24am. Been trying to write since last week. Scribbled down some ideas. A plot A premise Something Will be back later.
January 11 Brain Dead Day "To absent friends, lost loves, old gods, and the season of mist; and may each of us give the devil his due." --Neil Gaiman
Woke up 5pm yesterday. Still awake. Expected SYSTEMS CRASH... after lunch... maybe... POWER PUFF ARCHER The great thing about LORD OF THE RINGS is that out of the nine heroes, every one will have a favorite. And from the looks of things, the runaway winner for Cutest Hero with a Bow and Arrow is...well, let's see what the girls are saying: "You know what, Legolas is very cute. (I see that many girls noticed that as well.)" -- Clarrisa "oh well after that Tin and i watched LOTR! as for me, this is my second time to watch it. and again i saw my new heroes, Strider and Legolas! weeeeeeee!" -- Isi There's even a whole message thread devoted to Legolas. :) That's good. :) It's good to have heroes. NAPOLI Had dinner at Napoli last night. Good food at good prices. Big slices of pizza! Cheap beer! Go! Go! Go! Napoli, Timog cor. T.Morato, open 11am to 11pm, everyday
Short-attention span "Hanggang dun lang?! Dapat sinabi nila part one lang pala ito!" said this teen-age girl as she came out of the mvoie house. Ah... the next generation. So, please go watch THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. It's a great movie. Bring the kids. (And yes, it's only part one of a trilogy) Read the book if you can't wait.
Some helpful tips of how to break into the comic book industry by Devin Grayson . Okay, so how do you get DC Comics to solicit a proposal from you? You kind of need to ask them to. And that means: YOU HAVE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF. There are a few different ways to do this: a) send a query letter b) make contact with an editor online or at a convention c) befriend somebody in the business d) spill coffee on someone entering 1700 Broadway, and hope for the best
And we're online in five four three two one... Ahhhh... finally, back online. This must be bad. I was undergoing withdrawal symptoms from being offline. So, I kept texting my Wireless Journal during the break. You can make your own WJ . It's like my mobile blog. :) Ugh! I really need to get out of the city. (And I'm sure several people will laugh in disbelief when they read that previous line.) STAR BOY Check out who got included in list of Stars who will shine in 2002 ! hahahahah! Way to go, Brandie! Brandie Tan, art director, BBDO : Francis Bernard G. Tan more popularly known as Brandie (that's Brandie with ie) is made of really strong stuff.
