Did any of you get to watch that episode of IMBESTIGADOR on GMA?
They conducted an experiment to test the honesty of the Filipino.
They had a teen-age girl walk around in the different parts of the city and they had her drop her wallet. She sometimes dropped her wallet in front of someone or a group of people. Sometimes she'd just leave the wallet even if no one was looking. Inside the wallet was two hundred pesos and a note that said, in case the wallet was found to please call her number.
If I remember correctly, 65 people returned the wallet. 15 people didn't.
As pointed out by a UP Psych-teacher, some of the 15 people who didn't return the money were really poor might have felt they needed the money more, some didn't own cellphones and wouldn't have a way to call the owner, and some might have just considered it too much of a bother to return it.
Later on, the IMBESTIGADOR team interviewed some of the people who returned the wallet.
It was encouraging to hear two grade-school girls say that they returned the wallet because it was the right thing to do, that even if no one saw them take the wallet, they knew that God would've seen them do it.
All is not lost.
God bless the Filipino.
God bless the Philippines!
And on a related note... Dean and Team Siglo has announced PROJECT: HERO, their latest comic book project which is planned to be released this December. A couple of weeks ago, Andrew posted the teaser poster of WHAPAK!, his super-hero project as well.
So, is it possible to create a new hero for the Pinoys? A new hero that will have the same effect as DARNA? Have that same effect as when kids and American soldiers read SUPERMAN during WWII?
I was in Comic Quest two weeks ago and the guys there asked me a similar type question.
"It's going to be tricky," I said.
"That's the challenge!" they told me.
Hmmm... indeed.
Gerry recently posted some art of what are probably the first costumed Filipino super heroes. So, whatever happened to them? How come they didn't make the transition from comic book charactes to pop icons?
For every kid out there who says they want to be like Darna or Mulawin (and soon they'll say they want to be that Sugo kid), how many kids say they'd rather be Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, or some anime character?
Couple of years ago, Whilce Portacio started a discussion in the Komikero Message Board about creating a new Filipino super-hero. It was became one of the longest message threads at that time. And... well... there was whole lot of discussion... and we never got see that hero come to life. Ho-hum.
So, it will be interesting to see the outcome of these new projects!
And I think I rambled far away from my original topic.
Will go home now.
Good night, kids.
