Get WASTED online “ Wasted is a nihilistic poem of violence and love gone wrong, one of the most intense and uncompromising portrayals of insanity that I've seen in print with a touch of failed romance that makes it something we can all relate to in our darkest moments.” -- Randy Lander, SNAP JUDGEMENTS at The Fourth Rail , 2004 "A recent graphic novel of note, by Filipino writer/artist Gerry Alanguilan. A marvellous little black book of lost love, unhinged hatred for everything everywhere, and making things right using only guns. Early work by a potentially brilliant creator." -- Warren Ellis , 1998 Mr. Lander and Mr. Ellis were obviously talking about Gerry Alanguilan’s WASTED, which quickly sold out back in 1998 and even though it was reprinted later on, is currently out of stock. So, for those of you who didn’t get to pick up the original / Xeroxed edition during the mid-90s and if you didn’t get to buy the trade paperback in 1998 and if you weren’t a big fan of Pulp...
"If confusion about your love life is ruining your day, I think it's good to go over to your best friend's house and ruin her day too." --STEVE MARTIN, L.A. Story BWAHAHAHA! That quote just reminded me of some people. Wait. Wait. The line just reminded me of myself. Back in the old days, whenever I ended up on that road called the Blues, I bugged a whole lot of people (and ruined their day). I used to go to Moy’s house with three or four mini-cheesecakes (bought from that small cake shop along White Plains) and we’d talk about whatever was bothering me while we ate the cake. The cake, being comfort food, was supposed to make us feel better, but sometime we just went out for more cake. Then there was time I went to Mark’s house around midnight. Since the cheesecake shop was closed, we ended up going to Wendy’s at the corner of Kamias and EDSA. We ordered take out and I kept on ranting about my love life (or lack of) until we got to the UP Oblation. There we stay til 2...
In the men’s room, I saw a cockroach climb up the wall beside the mirror. It then took a peek at itself. Its antennae swiveled and twitched. Then it crawled back down the wall. It must’ve been preparing to go out on a gimmick. After all, it is a Friday night. I then went back to my desk to continue working.
CUT-TO: 8 YEARS LATER This month marks my 8th year in advertising, in Harrison Communications. I’m here right now because of Taps. Yup, he’s to blame. Brandie also had something to do with all of this. I think the ball got rolling during one of those nights at my dad’s wake eight years ago. Taps was telling the guys about this new commercial he was working on. It started a couple of upcoming talents named Diether Ocampo, Ryan Agoncillio, and Patricia Javier. Yup, it was the Sprite “Magpaka-totoo Ka” campaign. Even though Taps was just telling us the stories of those TV commercials, we were already laughing and couldn’t wait to see it on-air. (Somewhat appropriate that we were talking about TV commercials at my dad’s wake.) I don’t know if it was on that same night or some other night we all got together when I mentioned to the group that I now had to find a more regular job; that my freelance writing gigs and minimal comic book sales were just not enough. Taps mentioned that McCann was...
I got tagged by Wella. Since it was Wella’s first blog post (and I’m really proud that she’s started blogging) I must now tell you: 7 RANDOM FACTS ABOUT ME 1. I was a magician. Well, I was an amateur magician. A very, very amateur magician. I was a big fan of David Copperfield. I used to record his TV specials, which were re-run on Channel 9 over and over again. When the local channels stopped airing his specials, my uncle in Boston would record it for me and would me packages with that video tape as well as magic books and magic tricks. So, I got as far as learn one rubber band trick and transforming a P500 bill into a P5 bill (yes, there was once a P5 bill). I also learned one routine using the Chinese Linking Rings. If you ask me to do a magic trick now, I’d probably mess it up and just make your P500 bill disappear by buying a bunch of comic books. 2. I was a ninja. Well, I was an amateur ninja. A very, very amateur ninja. Okay, I was a very horrible ninja. I maybe the only ninja t...
wellavatar Okay, need your help in picking a Simpsons-avatar for Wella. Which one resembles her most? :-D
DOH!!! This is my Simpsons avatar. (Well, it's the closest I could get to making it look like me.) You can make your own Simpsons avatar at: http://www.simpsonsmovie.com/ And here I am with Homer! Hey Moe! Can I have a Flaming Moe?!
FUTURAMA So, while the rest of the blogosphere gets flooded with reviews about TRANSFORMERS and the iPHONE, I’ll talk about a movie which I think no one has seen (or at least, people don’t intend to watch it intentionally). Last Sunday, I got to watch NEXT, starring Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel . Interestingly enough, the story was based on the Philip K. Dick novel “The Golden Boy”. Which makes me wonder why Hollywood loves to raid Philip K. Dick’s library whenever they want to do some sci-fi story, which they’ll rewrite and revise it into an action movie. Anyway, Cage finds himself back in Las Vegas and once again he’s leaving it. This time, he’s got super powers! He’s a mutant! Well… maybe. He’s a precog; meaning he’s got the fantastic ability to see into the future… he can see two minutes into his future. Instead of wearing a black leather outfit with an X on it, he decides to put on a bad suit and use his power to become a second-rate magician in Vegas. He also u...
I Pledge Allegiance In my mom’s regular play list of stories of tell are the two times my dad got offered to work abroad and he declined both of them. One was an offer to teach in a university in Hawaii and the other was to work for the American TV network ABC-- and this was back during the time when there were only three big TV networks in the States. My dad’s main reason for staying in the Philippines was his loyalty to his boss. His boss took a risk with his vision of a TV station and fully supported his dream. So, he felt it wouldn’t be right to leave his boss and the station just like that. When my dad started to get barraged by company intrigues, he decided to just resign to help his boss save face. Even after my dad left the TV station, he set up another business that was related to broadcasting-- he became a blocktimer and brought in all those shows we grew up watching (e.g. Transformers, Voltron, Macross, Takeshi’s Castle, Twilight Zone, Moonlighting). Later on, he got to mana...

The Ultimate Reality Show So, maybe, just maybe, if the prize was a year-supply for free DVDs from MCS, then maybe I'll try to convince Wella to join this contest. Maybe.
Towers I came up with the idea of using the signal bars. Paulo came up with the idea of showing people all over the country, rushing to see this phenomenon. Ems was the one who gave it heart by setting the opening scene in a small barrio and showing kids running to tell the whole town about it. (When I grow up, I wanna be like Ems.) And Sid... well, Direk Sid made it look great. LAW&ORDER vs HANNIBAL LECTER We got to watch “Fracture” last Sunday. It’s a good movie. (Well, anything is better than watching Spider-Man 3 all over again.) Basic plot: Man discovers wife his cheating on him. Man kills wife. Man surrenders to police. Man manages to outwit the police and the lawyer. Man is played by Anthony Hopkins . The man he plays is Ted Crawford, a structural engineer who’s specialized in finding the faults and fractures of airplanes that crashed. As it turns out, his obsession in finding the weaknesses in objects can easily be extended to people. It’s a whodunit with a twist (because you already know he did it). So, maybe the right term for this movie is that it’s a howdunit. Once explained at the end of the movie, it all makes sense and makes for a good pay-off. And yet, through out the movie, this little voice at the back of my head (who strangely enough, sounded like Grissom) kept asking: why didn’t they find the original blood trail? Why didn’t they check...
I got tagged by Carl : “Each player of this game starts with 6 weird things about himself or herself. People who get tagged need to write a blog entry of their own as well as state the rule clearly. In the end, you need to tag 6 people as well and list their names. Don’t forget to let them know they’ve been tagged!” SIX WEIRD THINGS ABOUT ME: 1 When I was a kid, I used to watch “Jennifer Slept Here” on RPN9. It was about a teen-age boy who suddenly discovers his house is haunted by the ghost of a beautiful blonde actress. I liked it so much, I pretended to have an invisible ghost friend—which lasted a total of one school day, because my classmates started to think I was a freak. 2 When I was a kid, I also used to watch “Hardy Boys” and “Karl Kolchak: The Night Stalker”. One day, I was reading a book about horoscopes and under “possible occupation” for Scorpios were detective or occult investigator. So, I was determined to become one or the other. Then I found out that detectives don’t ...
Your Last Full Show Over Sunday lunch, my mom was talking about getting a senior citizen’s card so she can watch movies for free. She then told me about how she once got to talk to a security guard of a mall where an old man was found dead in the mall’s movie theater. She said that after the body was found, the security people let the audience leave first before switching on the lights and brought out the body through the back of the mall. And it turns out, this has happened more than once. (Which makes me wonder what’s in that mall that causes senior citizens to come in… and never come out . Hmmm… seems like a case for Trese. And for some reason, I am suddenly reminded of that scene in “Solyent Green” , where this dying old man was wheeled into a room full of movie screens and was shown beautiful sceneries like sunsets at the beach and then they were put to sleep and they were turned to the food Solyent Green.) As my mom finished her lunch, she casually mentioned that she wouldn’t m...
almost famous Next to Gerry and Nil getting the Superman:Birthright gig (as well as all the X-Men/Wolverine/mutant titles they’ve done)… next to Carl’s ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH winning the National Book Awards and getting adapted into an award-winning musical AND getting adapted into a movie for the MMFF… this next news has got to be a major highlight in realm of geekdom, as far as my friends as concerned. So, let me congratulate Rachel “I can pull of the whole Kate Hudson look better than Kate Hudson” Warren for getting a gig in the most fun workplace on earth (nope, not Disneyland). That’s right! Starting this June, Rachel will be working the almighty dot.company of Google. You’re going to the Googleplex, baby! Don’t forget us when you’re famous!
Differential Diagnosis 2 The ultrasound results came back and it found nothing: everything’s okay. My kidney, my gallbladder, my liver, my prostate are all okay. So, after almost four hours of waiting in line and 30 minutes getting scanned, and another 30 minutes of waiting for the doctor to see my again; my doctor took one second to look at the results of my ultrasound and said, “Everything’s normal. You still have that pain? Go get an endoscopy.” The next day, I was the hospital at 6:30am. I went up to the endoscopy area and gave them my name. The nurse checked the schedule and confirmed that my name was on the list. She then looked around and asked, “You’re all alone?” I looked around as well and said, yes. “You don’t have a companion?” I nodded. I asked, “Why? Do I need a companion?” She then explained that I was going to be sedated and that it’ll take 30 minutes to an hour for the effects of the drug to wear off. I said okay and she asked me to turn over my belongings. When I br...
Differential Diagnosis There is this nagging, constant dull pain on my lower-left abdomen. It started last Sunday. It would call attention to itself everytime I stand up or walk or move. I don't notice the pain when I am still. I Googled it and was expecting to find an illness called: lazyass-itist. (No such thing.) Possible cause for the pain? Kidney stones, muscle cramp, or I'm pregnant. I'll get an ultrasound tomorrow. (I hope it's a boy.)
