Couple of weeks ago, Ms. Diyco featured another campaign made by the creatives here at Harrison Communications. Here's her review about the Neozep "Neozerye" TV campaign: Romancing the mighty colds cure ADS AND ENDS, Nanette A Franco-Diyco BUSINESS WORLD Vol. XX, No. 139, Friday-Saturday, February 9-10, 2007 http://www.bworldonline.com/Weekender020907/main.php?id=marketing_diyco The four television commercials that serialize the life of pretty housemaid Luwalhati, culminating in a storybook wedding to her once-upon-a-time señorito from the imposing mansion belong to an ad campaign awards class all its own. There have been other spoofs of soap operas selling other brand categories in the past. But for several reasons put together, the Neozep series of commercials that began with honest-to-goodness ad teasers that looked and sounded like teasers for true-blue soap operas proved ultra entertaining and more importantly, "reinforced Neozep’s leadership and further s...

I wish my phone-cam could’ve taken… Photo that was never taken #1 On my way to work, at the corner of our street and EDSA, I stopped and clicked on the right-turn signal-light and slowly tried to merge into that historic avenue. That’s where I saw him standing against the vast white wall that separated the rails of the MRT from the traffic on EDSA. He was a “taong grasa”; dressed in tattered military green shorts and not much else except his dark, grimy skin that was wrapped taut against his skeletal frame. He stood on the sidewalk-that-wasn’t-a-sidewalk. Even though I was all across on the other side of the four-lane traffic of EDSA, I could imagine the heels of his feet trying to find footing on that slim side of concrete. He looked across the street, as if meaning to challenge the 10am traffic of buses, trucks, and cars. The skeletal man seemed to shiver as the steady stream of vehicles caused this great wind to rush southwards. Seeing his dark figure against that white wall made me...
(G)ood Old Days I had this grand plan to upload a new story for today. (But I didn't get to do it.) So, here are some old pictures / ads from Globe's (G)moment days. It still seemed relevant for today's occassion.
romance(G) (click photo to see larger version) I found Shiloah's blog via a link from Mark's blog . I think it was one of her 2002 entries when she wrote about her love and longing for her boyfriend who was studying in the US. I cut-and-pasted it because it was such a wonderful entry. Couple of months later, we got a Job Order to make an IDD ad for our client. I dug up Shiloah's entry and presented it to my boss, but for some reason I now forget, we didn't get to present it. Cut-to: January 2003, we go another Job Order and this time it was for an IDD ad that was going to come out in Valetine's Day. I presented the idea again and my boss said okay. When we presented it to client, we showed the the usual IDD ads first, which showed couple talking on cellphone and had the usual price of the IDD call in really large font. I presented the Shiload ad last. I didn't show them the ad at first. I just read the copy out loud. I read it slowly and paused before I read the...
RAMBOL NA NAMAN!!! I recently found out that we're already airing this version of the Magic Flavors TV commercial, so I can now post it. When we first presented and shot the commercial, this was supposed to be the game that the wrestlers were playing. (We have no idea what it's called, so all through-out the meetings and production, we just called it the Slap-Clap Game.) During the shoot, Direk Jeorge and the team thought of making the wrestlers do another game: the bato-bato-pik aka rock-paper-scissors game. During the editing, we found the "bato-bato-pik" version funnier, so that became the launch material. I've posted this TVC before, but it was recently review in Business World. It's not everyday we get a glowing review like this, so... here you go. :) Subtlety in communication ADS AND ENDS NANETTE A. FRANCO-DIYCO BUSINESS WORLD, Vol. XX, No. 134, Friday-Saturday, February 2-3, 2007 http://www.bworldonline.com/Weekender020207/main.php?id=marketing_diyco I must salute Harrison Communication for the totally different look and feel of BPI in its 30-second television commercial launched during the holidays. It adopted a market leader stance that could not have flown high without the heritage and the confidence of a bank like BPI. The first time I caught the commercial, I mistook it for a teaser ad. I thought it was a commercial that deliberately left the viewer hungering for more facts. Ergo, I concluded that there must be a sequel to it, the major material scheduled for launch perhaps after a week or two. This was the role of a teaser ad: It is meant to titillate the viewer and ca...
NEOZERYE You can finally watch the "complete first season" of the Neozep "Neozerye". The team had a lot of fun working on this project. It was also great how client recognized the potential of this campaign and approved the production of four commercials that went beyond the usual 15 or 30-second time limit and also took a leap to do something rarely done by other brands in the category. Here you go! PROLOGUE PART 1 PART 2 PART 3 Agency: Harrison Communications Client: Unilab Product: Neozep Creative Director: Isabel Gamboa Copywriter: Darwin Bamba Art Directors: Elvin Julian, Rommel Joson Producer: Chona Bustamante Director: Erik Matti
RAMBOL!!! I've been itching to upload this commercial since we finished it last year. It was one of those ideas that sounded so stupid that we just had to present it. We even acted it out during the client presentation. After we got it approved, we had a difficult time finding the right talents. The caster got so desperate, she started hanging out at gyms and at bars that were frequented by foreigns. (She must have had a hard time trying to convince them that she wasn't trying to pick the up.) Well, she was, but it was for professional reasons. Anyway, the commercial finally aired yesterday. Hoooraayyy!!! :-)
G o o g l e Time Tony Scott’s DÉJÀ VU can also be described as CSI: TIME TRAVEL or "Seven Days" Minus Four (did anybody ever watch that TV show “ Seven Days ”?). In the movie, Denzel Washington plays ATF Officer Doug Carlin. In the course of investigating the bombing of a New Orlean’s ferry, he is recruited to become part of secret government task force to help track down the terrorists. “Snow White” is the top secret operation/device that allows the task force to look four days into the past. So, imagine Google Earth, but you’re looking at that spot of the earth four days ago—and you can even go inside the rooms of house, see through walls, and hear people’s conversations. The “time window” works like “video streaming”, so they can’t rewind and check other places in the past. They can only view one place, one person at a time. The writers toss in some time travel/physics terminologies like the Einstein-Rosen Bridge just to make the logic of it all sound okay. (They could’ve...
trese: The Choir Story by Budjette Tan Art by Elbert Or Hank had tended the bar of The Diabolical long enough to know that the one who just entered was another troubled soul. The typical patron of The Diabolical were the goth-girls and the vampire wanna-bes who dressed in leather and velvet despite the tropical weather of Manila. There were also the 24-hour party people, who danced to the ever-escalating electronic beats in the clubs next door, but who slipped into The Diabolical because their beer was cheaper. So, when the man in the denim jacket entered place and didn’t fit into the usual profile, Hank knew this was someone in a bad need of a drink. The man unbuttoned his jacket as he took three steps down to the main floor of the club. Before he could even reach the bar, Hank had already prepared a shot glass, poured the tequila and set the salt and lemon on a little plate. He then reached into the cooler, past the sea of ice cubes for a bottle of San Mig Light. The man sat on the ...

Once upon a time... Many years ago (maybe six or so years ago), I wanted to do a music video for The Jerks' song "Rage". The video would star the futuristic versions of Darna, Panday, and Zuma. These analog versions would battle mecha-powered Metrocom cops in an alternate reality where Martial Law was never lift. I imagined it would animated like how AKIRA was animated. Since I didn't have the funds or the resourcers to do that, I just thought I'd turn it to a comic book. So, I sent the script to one of the guys and got a couple of sketches in return. Arvie, the artist, loved the idea so much, he started to map out the whole history of the characters in the "music video". Anyway, our day-jobs got the better of us, and we never even got to do Page 1 of the project. I just thought of "giving birth" to it now, especially since we wanted to make that story of yet-another-unproduced-anthology called NOV30: A TIME FOR HEROES. Given the chance, I'...

And for a moment, the clouds parted and revealed... Skyworld is the creation of writer Mervin Ignacio and artist Ian Sta. Maria. If you happened to drop by the Alamat table at the Komikon, you would've seen the two full-color posters for this book. If you didn't get to see that, you can head on over to the SKYWORLD gallery (which is filed under Sgt.Digmaan's site, for some strange reason). SKYWORLD should be available early 2007.

a review of STORMWATCH P.H.D.

RIDERS OF THE STORM I bought the very first STORMWATCH because I was Jim Lee fanboy. It had an interesting premise of a team of super-powered soldiers sanctioned by the United Nations. Of course, I was disappointed when I found out Jim Lee only did the cover and the inside art was nowhere near as good as Lee’s art style. The stories also felt like I was reading the rejected scripts of “Street Fighter the Movie”, where we just see costumed wrestlers fighting in different parts of the world. The next time I picked up STORMWATCH was their 37th issue , when Warren Ellis and Tom Raney took over the series and I was not disappointed with that run. Ellis made the team for ruthless and made them battle deadlier threats with delusions of bringing about a better world and inject a conspiracy angle that made you not trust Weatherman One, the commander of Stormwatch. Ellis eventually pushed the title towards the direction of the wide-screen, action-packed stories of THE AUTHORITY. The Stormwatch n...
I curl my toes to music downloaded from the net. The screen's the sunrise from the beach south of where I sit. My face is gray from typing, burnt from radiation. No need to leave the second floor to take a paid vacation. by Kris Lacaba, march 2003 I am back from my 10-day vacation. I had just great hopes to finish a lot of things. I thought I could finish writing all 13 issues of TRESE, but only got to write one. (I did get to plot out everything from #9 to 13. I now know where the Kambal came from and what really happened to Anton Trese. TRESE #7 is scheduled to be release mid-December. So, it might take time before the rest of you get to find out the mystery behind Papa Trese.) I ended up spending more because I tried to write in internet cafes and Starbucks. I should’ve stayed home. But whenever I did stay home, I just ended up sleeping. At least, I had a relatively stress-free birthday (compared to last year, when I was running back and forth to attend three differen...
