Don't Look Under the Hood The other day my mom drove to the church to attend mass. After the mass, her car wouldn't start. She said the battery seemed drained and she couldn't recall if she left any of the lights on. The next day, she asked our neighbor if their driver could go with her and try to jumpstart the car. So, they went back to the church and to her surprise, the car started. Thinking there might still be someone wrong with the electrical system of the car, she brought it to the reair shop. The mechanic said that once the battery gets drained, it's not possible for it to start again. "Maybe your car has a friendly spirit in it," was the diagnosis of the mechanic. Which made me wonder, how much do mechanics pay for exorcising possessed cars.
52 weeks later All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am So many stories of where I've been And how I got to where I am But these stories don't mean anything When you've got no one to tell them to It's true, I was made for you --Brandi Carlile, THE STORY
Post-its A wastebasket overflowing with Kleenex. An empty blisterpack of Neozep on top of it all. On the shower drain are overlapping spirals made out of long, black hair. The scent of burnt Spam still lingers in the kitchen. Reminders of your very short stay. As I clean up everything, I get teary-eyed, but I stop myself when I remember that you used up all the tissue.
arrival The trip seemed to take too long even though there wasn’t any traffic on the road. I glanced at the taxi cab’s speedometer and I was surprised to see the needle at the 100kph mark. As it wobbled near 110kph, it still felt like we weren’t moving fast enough. Funny how time warps when I’m rushing to meet you.

While at the urinal, my thoughts drifted to Leonard Nimoy in a turtleneck sweater (What follows is my attempt to track down how my brained hyperlinked “taking a piss” to “Leonard Nimoy”.) So, there I was, standing at the urinal and while I was doing my business, I looked down and noticed a piece of paper in my breast pocket. That paper contained the number of the people who manage my apartment. I got that number because I was supposed to give it to Ms. Chin, the lady who sells prepaid load (because she’s looking for a new place). And I thought about how some names sound better if they were preceded by a “Mrs” rather than a “Ms”; like Mrs. Peel from THE AVENGERS . Which made me wonder if there was ever a Mr. Peel and if he was ever introduced in the show. The image of Mr. Steed and Mrs. Peel flashed in my head. That visual then quickly became the image of another couple from another TV show that was produced in the 60s/70s. In my head, I could see Leonard Nimoy in a turtleneck sweater ...

a review of INTERWORLD

Harry Potter + Sliders + Peter Pan + 1960s X-Men + Green Lantern Corps = INTERWORLD Well, it’s not as bad as it sounds. It was a fun read for the most part. Well, maybe it was because I identified with the character so much. Joey Harker is a boy who’s “directionally challenge”. He got lost in his own house. (Same way I got lost in my own neighborhood. And I still get lost every time I go in Glorietta. I never know which corridor will bring me to Filbars and which one will bring me to G4.) Anyway, so Joey Harker gets lost in his own town and ends up in an alternate reality and ends up meeting other J/o/e/y Harkers from other realities. He gets recruited to they’re mission, which is to protect the rest of the multiverse from the forces of magic and science. The other more interesting story is how this story ended up becoming a novel. Neil Gaiman talked about it in his blog ; how INTERWORLD was originally supposed to be pitched as an animated movie (and they tried to pitch it to Dreamwor...
You Can Quote Me on That Announced at the San Diego Comic-Con last week, Warren Ellis will be writing ASTONISHING X-MEN: SECOND STAGE. When asked why he decided to accept writing the X-Men title, Ellis answered: “Well… I'm closing in on 40 now, so I'm pretty much washed up and preparing for the time where I'll have to sell what operating internal organs I have left for bill money, and I'm looking around to see what's left in commercial comics that I haven't done.” He was also asked what readers can expect with his X-Men stories. “Oh, the usual, you know. Raping your childhoods, using my position to destroy everything you love, displaying opinions you may not agree with and writing with my own voice and personality. All the things people hate in commercial comics these days. And yet, all the things I am specifically hired for. It's a funny old world.” Sounds like fun! Can’t wait for the first issue. The Heart of a Woman

I found out about this shampoo commercial --yes! It’s a SHAMPOO commercial!!!-- from Creative Review Magazine (May 2007) . “Kazuro Nakazawa, the director behind the anime experience in Kill Bill Volume 1, has created this stunning animation for Japanese shampoo Ascience. The story, which despite its beautiful rendering is unlikely to please feminists, revolves around the Japanese proverb, “Hair is the heart of a woman”. In it, a Japanese princess falls in love with a young Samurai but is forbidden from seeing him by her stern father. Devastated by her loss, she hacks into her unfeasibly long hair but, as she cuts, blood spurts from the severed strands, causing her death, as well as that of her lover who was using the locks to climb up the castle walls to be with her. The film ends with the proverb spelt out in the princess’ blood.” So, what are the chances we’ll ever see a Filipino shampoo account do something like that? While we dream about that, you can read more about the ...

Get WASTED online “ Wasted is a nihilistic poem of violence and love gone wrong, one of the most intense and uncompromising portrayals of insanity that I've seen in print with a touch of failed romance that makes it something we can all relate to in our darkest moments.” -- Randy Lander, SNAP JUDGEMENTS at The Fourth Rail , 2004 "A recent graphic novel of note, by Filipino writer/artist Gerry Alanguilan. A marvellous little black book of lost love, unhinged hatred for everything everywhere, and making things right using only guns. Early work by a potentially brilliant creator." -- Warren Ellis , 1998 Mr. Lander and Mr. Ellis were obviously talking about Gerry Alanguilan’s WASTED, which quickly sold out back in 1998 and even though it was reprinted later on, is currently out of stock. So, for those of you who didn’t get to pick up the original / Xeroxed edition during the mid-90s and if you didn’t get to buy the trade paperback in 1998 and if you weren’t a big fan of Pulp...
"If confusion about your love life is ruining your day, I think it's good to go over to your best friend's house and ruin her day too." --STEVE MARTIN, L.A. Story BWAHAHAHA! That quote just reminded me of some people. Wait. Wait. The line just reminded me of myself. Back in the old days, whenever I ended up on that road called the Blues, I bugged a whole lot of people (and ruined their day). I used to go to Moy’s house with three or four mini-cheesecakes (bought from that small cake shop along White Plains) and we’d talk about whatever was bothering me while we ate the cake. The cake, being comfort food, was supposed to make us feel better, but sometime we just went out for more cake. Then there was time I went to Mark’s house around midnight. Since the cheesecake shop was closed, we ended up going to Wendy’s at the corner of Kamias and EDSA. We ordered take out and I kept on ranting about my love life (or lack of) until we got to the UP Oblation. There we stay til 2...
In the men’s room, I saw a cockroach climb up the wall beside the mirror. It then took a peek at itself. Its antennae swiveled and twitched. Then it crawled back down the wall. It must’ve been preparing to go out on a gimmick. After all, it is a Friday night. I then went back to my desk to continue working.
CUT-TO: 8 YEARS LATER This month marks my 8th year in advertising, in Harrison Communications. I’m here right now because of Taps. Yup, he’s to blame. Brandie also had something to do with all of this. I think the ball got rolling during one of those nights at my dad’s wake eight years ago. Taps was telling the guys about this new commercial he was working on. It started a couple of upcoming talents named Diether Ocampo, Ryan Agoncillio, and Patricia Javier. Yup, it was the Sprite “Magpaka-totoo Ka” campaign. Even though Taps was just telling us the stories of those TV commercials, we were already laughing and couldn’t wait to see it on-air. (Somewhat appropriate that we were talking about TV commercials at my dad’s wake.) I don’t know if it was on that same night or some other night we all got together when I mentioned to the group that I now had to find a more regular job; that my freelance writing gigs and minimal comic book sales were just not enough. Taps mentioned that McCann was...
I got tagged by Wella. Since it was Wella’s first blog post (and I’m really proud that she’s started blogging) I must now tell you: 7 RANDOM FACTS ABOUT ME 1. I was a magician. Well, I was an amateur magician. A very, very amateur magician. I was a big fan of David Copperfield. I used to record his TV specials, which were re-run on Channel 9 over and over again. When the local channels stopped airing his specials, my uncle in Boston would record it for me and would me packages with that video tape as well as magic books and magic tricks. So, I got as far as learn one rubber band trick and transforming a P500 bill into a P5 bill (yes, there was once a P5 bill). I also learned one routine using the Chinese Linking Rings. If you ask me to do a magic trick now, I’d probably mess it up and just make your P500 bill disappear by buying a bunch of comic books. 2. I was a ninja. Well, I was an amateur ninja. A very, very amateur ninja. Okay, I was a very horrible ninja. I maybe the only ninja t...
