Too tired to come up with a pun about “cats” for the title for this blog entry Around 12:30am, I was already in bed, planning to rest for a while before I dive into writing Trese #7 (Yes, Kajo, I haven’t started typing the script, but I do know how it starts and how it ends. I just don’t know how it middles, as Gaiman has said before me). So, I was planning to write Trese #7 and write in my journal and write copy for this new project we’re working on, when I suddenly get a call from Brandie. I don’t know if I was just too sleepy or I’m losing my hearing, but this is what Brandie told me: “Kuya, can I bring this cab to the house? Yeah, because they won’t let me bring it in our building. So, can you get the cab here, bring it to the house, and me and Tin can come pick it up on Sunday and bring it to PAWS.” Took us awhile to clarify that he was talking about a cat and not a cab. So, I had to drive back to Makati and pick up their cat. Legaspi, as they had christened him, followed them dur...

good news(G) The Globe TVC above is something I wrote back in 2002. It was part of the "making great things possible" campaign of Globe. I think this was my very first script that got approved and produced. It didn't have the same impact and buzz as the Globe "Katrina" aka "Punk" TVC, but I'd like to think it helped define Globe's new campaign at that time. And talking about good news... (talk about a very clumsy segue to what I really want to talk about) Here's something that happened last August 19, but I haven't really had the chance to blog about it. :-) "May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't to forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. “And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself." --Neil Gaiman Yes, Mr. Gaiman, this year has been filled...
TRESE TXTS Last night, I had this text chat with Kajo: KAJO: Budj! When’s the Komikon? I want to get ready for it! BUDJ: Oct 21 KAJO: Alright! I’ve got a lot of things I want to sell. Including TRESE #1 to 8. (At which point, I thought, “Trese #1 to 8? But we’re just working on #6. Oh no! I’m late with my scripts! DOH!”) BUDJ: Yup! TRESE # 1 to 8! And A lot of people are looking for NWA! Btw, the Komikon will be the anniv of Trese. We need to have a gmik for it. KAJO: We can wear Kambal masks! BUDJ: hehehe. I don’t think we’ll be able to pass-off as twins. KAJO: hahaha. You’re right. We’ll just make a poster. Anyway, we hope to be able to upload TRESE #6 in the next couple of weeks. (And I hope to finish writing #7 and #8 in the next couple of weeks as well)
At the back seat of a Death Cab Last week, I was driving home and was tuned in to NU107. I started to hear the opening tunes of Death Cab for Cutie’s "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". I’ve actually heard this song before, but it was only that particular night that I listened to every word of the lyrics. Love of mine some day you will die But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark The opening lines of the song struck me as not very optimistic. Quite morbid, actually. So, I listened more intently. No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight Waiting for the hint of a spark If Heaven and Hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark And as I drove up the fly-over that lead to EDSA, I began to get teary-eyed. This knot built at the bottom of my throat and wanted release. You and me have seen ever...
We now pause for some important words from... PROJ: DREAM GIRL "Dream Girl" was something we finished shooting and editing early this year, but the commercial only started airing a couple of weeks ago. The brief was to talk about how Tivoli chocolate is so delicious, you just can't eat one piece. So, instead of going through the usual route of showing someone eating the chocolate over and over again, we thought of showing the opposite. To show a situation that can never-ever happen again; a moment that only has a one in a million chance of ever happening and make that a counter-point to eating Tivoli, which you can have anytime you want. Of course, since the team was composed of three guys (and girl), the first story we made was about a loser/geek guy, living in a run-down apartment who suddenly discovers that his newly-moved in neighbor is a Viva Hot Babe and needs to borrow some sugar and take a shower in his bathroom because there's no water her apartment. Our boss...
On the way to work, I got this text from the NazgulQueen : A little thought for the slightly mad among us. "Sanity is the playground of the unimaginative." Have a good week :-) Just wanted to spread the fun!
Adobo Magazine Book Review: TRESE by Leigh Reyes http://adobomagazine.com/index/index.php?title=review_by_leigh_reyes&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 Alexandra Trese might have boobs, but you can’t really tell under the black trench coat she always wears. She has yet to be seen in heroic spandex and matching high-heeled combat boots. She is not as fond of emitting coruscating beams of light from her fingers as she is holding an espresso. Trese , the comic book whose pages she moodily graces, is written by Budjette Tan, with art by Kajo Baldisimo . The two address her with respect. How can they not? She solves mysteries. She isn’t into big grins. She’s got the Kambal, two powerful half-breed bodyguards, who wear the masks of comedy and tragedy. Her Manila is the twilight twin of the city we know, where superstitions take the bus and nightmares can be quite cordial. It is a delicate struggle, always, to imbue a story with a sense of place without making the place the story. ...

PROJECT: CYRANO I recently had the chance to work with Michael V aka Bitoy, when we were given the task to promote Globe's various texting and calling offers. The challenge was to come up with a situation that involved a whole lot of calling and texting that would some how involve Bitoy and his family. Reinard Santos, my Art Director, was the one who came up with the story of Bitoy helping out a cousin who didn't know what say to his very pretty date. Director Henry Frejas then took our idea, jumbled some scenes around, and made the story more streamlined. This is what finally aired on TV: Aside from the TV commercial, we also had to come up with a print ad that focused on the different offers. Since we wanted to show the benefit of each offer, we decided to make a series of print ads about them. Usually, in a tri-media campaign, the print ad is just an adaptation of the what one sees in the TV commercial. Working with my Art Director, Erwin Trivino, we decided to continue the ...

SUPERFANBOY Just my luck, I ended up seated beside Mr. Superfanboy last night, at the 12 midnight screening of SUPERMAN RETURNS. As much as I'd like to empathize with the next geek, he was just overreacting to everything on the screen. (I also think he was trying to impress his date.) Mr. Superfanboy kept going, OOOHHH! AHHH! WHOA! WOW! WHOA! ASTEEEG! Now, I must admit, there were a lot of scenes that made me gasp and say, "Astig!', but Mr. Superfanboy kept yelping every 60-seconds. He also went into, what I usually call, the Pesky Samaritan-mode, where he started to try and help the characters in the movie. He said things like, "LOOK OUT! NO! DON'T DO THAT! OH NO! WHOA! THAT'S BIG! WHOA! THAT'S KRYPTONITE! WHOA!" And he kept squirming and jumping up and down in his seat. Oh. What. Fun. Anyway, talking about geeks that also watched and loved the film, Jessica Zafra posted 13 reasons why SUPERMAN RETURNS is super. From a comic book geek point of view...
BAD BOYS! BAD BOYS! WHAT YOU GONNA DO WHAT YOU GONNA DO WHEN DIGMAAN COMES FOR YOU?! ULTRACOPS was supposed to be one of the super-secret projects that was going to be launched in this year's Komikon, but Ian got a bit excited and uploaded a whole bunch of art from the book. The story and plot is all Ian. Bow's helping out with the script and I'm... I'm just standing back, smiling, very happy to see Digmaan and his boys (and girl) kick super-human butt.
